Who would have thought that a video game adapted film would take the top of the box office? Rampage, based off the popular arcade game, was calculated to take the second place spot at the box office behind A Quiet Place, the super popular thriller that premiered just last week. But the curious action flick actually stunned naysayers and many of the predictions, taking the top spot with $34.5 million. A Quiet Place took the second spot by a small margin, making $32.4 million, according to Variety. The over-the-top nature of Rampage and Dwayne Johnson’s usual, charismatic acting is most likely the two reasons why the film managed to take the top spot.
Because of Friday the 13th and the subsequent weekend, Truth or Dare, the horror film created through a collaboration between Universal and Blumhouse, made a modest $19 million at the box office, taking the third spot. Taking the fourth and fifth spot are the sci-fi epic Ready Player One, taking in $11 million in its third week, and Blockers, the John Cena-led comedy about parents who are trying to stop their children from having sex on their prom night. It will be interesting to see where the films will end up in the coming week and whether or not A Quiet Place will return to the top of the board, but with Avengers: Infinity War looming in the near future, it seems highly doubtful.
