Rachel Weisz Starring in Legendary’s Adaptation of Mark McShane’s Acclaimed 1961 Suspense Novel ‘ Seance on a Wet Afternoon’; Tomas Alfredson Replaces Harry Bradbeer as Director

Deadline has exclusively learned that Mark McShane’s renowned 1961 thriller novel Seance on a Wet Afternoon is getting turned into a movie once more and will star Rachel Weisz (Black Widow) with Tomas Alfredson (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) on board to direct for Legendary.

Alfredson replaces Harry Bradbeer, who was originally set to direct, but he will remain on the film production team as an executive producer. Bradbeer left the project to return to direct Netflix’s Enola Holmes sequel.

The draft was written by BAFTA and Tony Award winner Jack Thorne, based on a story by himself and Bradbeer.

The story revolves around a self-proclaimed psychic medium which encourages her husband to abduct a child so she may assist the police in solving the crime and get fame for her powers. However, when her actual goals are revealed, her husband understands the plot threatens to engulf them both. The story was previously made into a film starring Richard Attenborough (Jurassic Park) and Kim Stanley (To Kill a Mockingbird) in 1964. Stanley was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress, and both received BAFTA nods for their performances.

Fans can watch Weisz starring as Melina in Marvel’s Black Widow, currently available for streaming on Disney+ for all subscribers. Along with starring in Seance on a Wet Afternoon, Weisz is also set to star in the comedy Love Child, which will also star Colin Farrell.
