The highly anticipated and secretive new Paul Thomas Anderson flick Phantom Thread has received its first trailer, courtesy of Focus Features. The first footage reveals Oscar-winner Daniel Day-Lewis in his final role as the actor recently announced that he will be retiring from the profession. Day-Lewis won one of his Best Actor Oscars from his previous work with Anderson in There Will Be Blood, and this latest collaboration looks to be all the more spellbinding and rich.
The following is the official synopsis for the film: “Set in the glamour of 1950s post-war London, renowned dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock (Day-Lewis) and his sister Cyril (Leslie Manville) are at the center of British fashion, dressing royalty, movie stars, heiresses, socialites, debutants and dames with the distinct style of The House of Woodcock. Women come and go through Woodcock’s life, providing the confirmed bachelor with inspiration and companionship, until he comes across a young, strong-willed woman, Alma (Vicky Krieps), who soon becomes a fixture in his life as his muse and lover. Once controlled and planned, he finds his carefully tailored life disrupted by love.”
The film may look a bit different than anything we’ve seen from PTA thus far, and that may be partly due to the fact that the filmmaker has stepped into the role of cinematographer as well for the first time on one of his own films.
Phantom Thread will hit theaters on December 25 of this year. See the trailer below.
