Peninsula, the Yeon Sang-ho-directed zombie thriller sequel to the 2016 cult favorite Train to Busan, has dominated once again in its second weekend in the South Korean box office. Between Friday and Sunday, Peninsula earned $4.49 million, a total which was earned from 2,100 screens. This was a drop of 52% from its opening weekend earnings of $9.92 million, however it propels the film’s cumulative score in South Korea to an impressive $21.0 million since its release on July 15.
Among competition comprising a mix of smaller local titles and reruns, Peninsula was single-handedly responsible for 81% of the nationwide box office in Korea, which decreased from 93% the first weekend.
The overall second weekend total dropped, with the aggregate box office for the top 10 films at $5.32 million, compared to $9.77 million in the first weekend. But this decrease could be turned around with the release of political-military thriller Steel Rain 2: Summit, set to debut in Korean theaters on Wednesday.
Peninsula continued its success with IMAX this second weekend, grossing $265,000 on 51 IMAX screens in six territories, lifting its IMAX cumulative to $1.06 million. This makes it the highest grossing Korean-language titles ever to play on IMAX screens in Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Peninsula’s IMAX total in Korea is $481,000.
