LucasFilm and Disney have tapped Wonder Woman director, Patty Jenkins, to direct new film in the Star Wars universe, Rogue Squadron. The film was announced during Disney’s ‘Investor Day 2020’ live stream. This will be the next Star Wars film to release in theaters, and will focus on the fighter pilots made famous in the mainline Star Wars films. It is set to release Christmas day 2023.
During the announcement, Jenkins tweeted out short video about the upcoming project, which shows her walking towards the iconic X-wing after putting on a rebel pilot jumpsuit.
“I grew up the daughter of a great fighter pilot,” Jenkins says in the video. “Every day, I would wake up and go outside and look up and see my Father and his squadron taking off in their F4s whirring across the sky. And It was the most thrilling thing I’ve experienced in my entire life. So, when he lost his life for this country, it ignited a desire in me to turn all of that tragedy and thrill into one day making the best fighter pilot movie of all time. But try as I might, and look as I did, I couldn’t find the right story ever. I kept looking and looking, but I just couldn’t find the right one, until now. Now I’ve found a movie about two things I love.”
Lucasfilm is also currently developing another Star Wars film with Taika Waititi, director of Jojo Rabbit and Thor: Ragnarok.
