‘Parasite’ HBO Adaptation In Development from Bong Joon-Ho and Adam McKay

It seems everyone is jumping on the Parasite bandwagon, even those high up at HBO. A limited series based on the award-winning South Korean film is in the works, with director Bong Joon-Ho set to collaborate with Adam McKay, best known for directing last year’s Vice.

Considering McKay’s work on HBO’s Succession, which just took home a Golden Globe for best drama series, the limited run show is in good hands. No official deals regarding the adaptation have been announced, but talks are underway with HBO following a bidding war in which the television conglomerate beat out Netflix for the rights.

Following the lower-class and mentally savvy Kim family’s professional (and often personal) relationship with the wealthier Park family, Parasite was lauded by critics as one of the top films of 2019. It took home the award for best foreign film last week at the Golden Globes, with Oscar buzz surrounding the film since its release at the Cannes Film festival in May, where director Joon-Ho received a ten-minute standing ovation.

Little details have been confirmed regarding HBO’s adaptation, other than McKay and Joon-Ho’s involvement on the English-language miniseries. The pair will serve as EPs, and will be joined by Dooho Choi, Miky Lee, Cho Young Ki, Francis Chung, Kevin Messick, Jerry Ko, and Fred Lee in producing the series.

With the Oscars right around the corner, and Parasite‘s chances of taking home the gold extremely likely, the series seems to be off to a good start.
