Spamalot, the upcoming movie adaptation of the hit Broadway musical, has been acquired by Paramount Pictures. It will be the first Broadway musical turned film production that Paramount has bought. When Disney purchased Fox, the film had already been finished but was, unfortunately, sidelined in 2019.
Casey Nicholaw directed the film. He choreographed the original Broadway production. He is behind hit musicals such as The Book of Mormon, Aladdin, Mean Girls, The Prom, The Drowsy Chaperone, and Something Rotten! The screenplay was written by Monty Python troupe member Eric Idle and with songs by Idle and John DuPrez
Spamalot has been a centerpiece in the theater world for a long time now. The newly adapted film is an adaptation of the seminal 1975 comedy based on the Monty Python and the Holy Grail that grossed just 1.9 million and the Broadway musical parody of the legend King Arthur that won a Tony for Best Musical and for the director, the late Mike Nichols. The film and musical versions are different in more ways than one.
The movie version starred Python members Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones, John Cleese, Graham Chapman, and Eric Idle.
The cast for Spamalot or release date has yet to be announced.
