The first Pacific Rim film, released back in 2013, was everything that the Transformers films should have been. It was coherently action packed, never took itself that seriously and provided an anime-like sense of fun straight from the mind of Guillermo del Toro. And, while making a sequel about giant robots rock em sock em-ing gigantic monsters called kaiju’s sounds like a no-brainer, it would require undoing the first film’s conclusion. However, the only thing more threatening to this film than a kaiju attack is having its release date delayed.
Now, Gypsy Danger might have to wait a bit before re-drifting, as Universal Pictures/ Legendary Entertainment have announced that they will be pushing the release date for Pacific Rim: Uprising back from February 23, 2018 to Friday, March 23, 2018. This new time will result in Uprising competing against number of other anticipated films, including a rebooted Robin Hood starring Taron Egerton and Wes Anderson’s animated film Isle of Dogs. Furthermore, the film will release week prior to Steven Spielberg’s highly anticipated Ready Player One, which is certain to do well at the box office.
According to the premise, Pacific Rim: Uprising takes place ten years after The Battle of the Breach, during which humanity sealed away the Kaiju’s portal to Earth. Vindicated by their victory, the Jaeger program has evolved into a powerful global defense force, one dedicated to turning the best and brightest into a new generation of heroes. The film will focus on Jake Pentecost (John Boyega), the son of Idris Elba’s Stacker Pentecost, who will rise up against the returning Kaiju threat. The film is directed by Steven S. DeKnight (Starz Spartacus) and will star Boyega alongside Scott Eastwood, Jing Tian, Cailee Spaeny, Rinko Kikuchi, Burn Gorman, Adria Arjona and Charlie Day.
