Official ‘Godzilla’ Trailer Released Months After Leak

After a year and a half of rumors, Comic Con reports, bootleg cell phone images, and a leaked teaser, an official trailer for Legendary and Warner Bros. Godzilla remake has finally been released.

Earlier this October, Warner Bros and Legendary were frantically taking down any links to an unofficial teaser that was leaked. While the studios never made any comment about the legitimacy of the leak, the footage seemed close to final. Only a few images from the leaked teaser made it into the official trailer that was just released (see below). One of the biggest differences between the leak and the official is the absence of another massive monster that Godzilla had presumably taken down, which is missing from the official studio trailer:

Aside from that, the official trailer features most of the principal cast – David Strathairn, Bryan Cranston, Ken Watanabe, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Elizabeth Olsen can all be seen reeling in shock. Opening the trailer with a military H.A.L.O (High Altitude Low Opening) jump really emphasizes the main difference between this Godzilla film and the 90’s Roland Emmerich version – the massive scale of the titular monster.

This new, official trailer does a fantastic job at keeping a lot of the movie a mystery. So far, a full body image of the monster has yet to be seen, since the beast is always shrouded by cloud or ash. Die-hard Godzilla fans have combed through the past films and used context to estimate the difference in the monster’s size over the past decades, and if this graphic is correct this Godzilla will be the largest one to ever grace the silver screen:

In fact, reports from early Comic Con footage have claimed that there is a scene in this new Godzilla that not only seemed to parody the size of the monster that starred in Roland Emmerich’s movie, but one-ups all the other kaiju that have appeared in Hollywood movies since like Pacific Rim and 2008’s Cloverfield.

Here is a comic that a fan made based off the footage that was shown at 2011’s Comic Con:

Presumably, the monster featured in the first panel might be the same beast that appeared in the leaked teaser. While that particular monster is giant-dinosaur-big, much like the size of Emmerich’s Godzilla, this new and improved vision by Gareth Edwards might be the biggest thing at the movies in 2014 – literally and figuratively. We’ll have to wait until May 16th of next year to know for sure, but until then check out the teaser below:
