The upcoming DC adaptation Wonder Woman may be looking to add strong shot of star power as actress Nicole Kidman appears in talks to join the cast. Gal Gadot (Furious 7) will play the titular Amazonian princess Diana Prince in highly anticipated big screen outing to be directed by Patty Jenkins (Monster). It’s unclear what role specifically Kidman is going up for but The Wrap speculates Kidman may be in negotiations to portray a powerful Amazonian warrior, potentially the character Hyppolyta.
While Kidman’s casting is surely not a guarantee at this juncture, it would be her first big-budget movie in quite some time. While the Oscar winning star has made a career full of eclectic and daring performances in some very idiosyncratic, auteur-driven films (Dogville, Moulin Rouge!, The Paperboy, Margot at the Wedding, Werner Herzog’s upcoming Queen of the Desert), the actress has flirted with franchises previously. In 2007, Kidman played the villainous Mrs. Coulter in The Golden Compass, the first chapter in a Harry Potter-like adaptation of a bestselling series of books. The film wasn’t a huge success so a sequel was abandoned. Kidman also played Bruce Wayne’s love interest in the 1995 sequel Batman Forever so if her casting in Wonder Woman comes to fruition, the current WB/DC cinematic universe will find a link to a former iteration.
Whether or not Wonder Woman pans out for Kidman, the prolific actress has a handful of films in the pipeline. She will next be seen opposite Chiwetel Ejiofor (Z for Zachariah) and Julia Roberts (August: Osage County) in the drama Secret in Their Eyes and will be featured in the ensemble for the drama Genius, bio of legendary book editor Max Perkins- Colin Firth (The King’s Speech), Jude Law (Cold Mountain), Laura Linney (Mr. Holmes) and Guy Pearce (Results) also star. Kidman also co-stars in the family dramedy The Family Fang, Jason Bateman’s film that recently premiered at the 2015 Toronto Film Festival and the aforementioned Queen of the Desert.
Kidman is also set to reunite with Rabbit Hole director John Cameron Mitchell for the comedy How to Talk to Girls at Parties, an adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s short story that will star Elle Fanning (Trumbo) and may star in Adrian Lyne’s upcoming sexual thriller Silent Wife. Kidman also recently wrapped the drama Lion co-starring Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire) and Rooney Mara (Carol). Phew, that was exhausting!
Wonder Woman is set to open in theaters on June 23, 2017. We will stay tuned for the latest.
