Nick Cassavetes (Alpha Dog) has closed a deal with MGM to write and direct Road House, the upcoming remake of the 1989 action film of the same name. A major appeal to the studio, sources say, was his history and ability writing female-centric films, much like we’ve seen him do in My Sister’s Keeper and The Other Woman.
This news comes a little over a month after MGM announced that they signed on UFC fighter Ronda Rousey for the starring role. Road House will by far be her biggest film role yet, but she is also starring alongside Mark Wahlberg in 2016’s Mile 22 which will see Rousey in her first lead role. We will most likely be seeing much more of Rousey as her star power is rapidly rising. This past year alone she gave cameo appearances in both the Entourage movie and Furious 7.
In the original Road House, Patrick Swayze played a bouncer who gets hired to clean up a dirty, rowdy bar in Missouri. This time, the story will center on a female lead in Rousey, who will take on Swayze’s famous character for herself.
After her November 14 fight against Holly Holm, Rousey has cleared her schedule and plans to start filming right away. MGM is also rebooting another classic, Rocky, with its spinoff film Creed coming to theaters this November.
