New York Film Critics Circle Awards Announce Winners; ‘Carol’ Takes Several Top Prizes

The New York Film Critics Circle (NYFCC) has announced their award winners for the 2015 year in film. Carol came away with many top accolades including Best Picture, Best Director (Todd Haynes), Best Screenplay (adapted by Phyllis Nagy), and Best Cinematography (Edward Lachman, Far From Heaven). These results fall in line with the film’s current sweeping of nominations for several awards platforms, most recently for the Independent Spirit Awards.

Inside Out, which has been a top contender so far for the Academy Awards’ Best Animated Feature award, nabbed the Critics’ stamp of approval.

The Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress categories turned up some surprises in Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn) and Kristen Stewart (Clouds of Sils Maria), respectively, who have both been present in award discussions, but have looked to be underdog competitors up to this point. Michael Keaton taking home Best Actor for Spotlight is noteworthy as he will be in consideration for the Best Supporting Actor nomination at the Golden Globes.
