Hey, remember Vampires? We at mxdwn Movies do. You may also remember a few of our articles mentioning Jim Jarmusch’s vampire film, Only Lovers Left Alive. Well, that film has new trailer attached to it. Unfortunately, said trailer doesn’t come with a wide U.S. release date. The film had its premiere at Cannes, where it received some nice reviews, and is being distributed by Sony Pictures Classics.
Only Lovers Left alive stars Tom Hiddleston as an aging (very aging) rockstar vampire named Adam, who reconnects with his wife Eve (Tilda Swinton), while trying to adjust to modern society. Things get complicated when Eve’s sister Ava (Mia Wasikowska) appears and throws all kinds of wrenches into their relationship.
The vampire-romance subgenre may seem like an odd direction for Jarmusch – known for his light-on-action, heavy-on-dialogue, often-in-black-and-white, critical-darling, indie films – but it wouldn’t be the first time the director has put his mark on a genre outside of his comfort zone. He’s tackled the western (1995’s Dead Man); the American gangster flick (1999’s Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai); films about assassins (2009’s The Limits of Control); even, to a lesser extent, the prison break genre (1986’s Down by Law).
Based on the trailer, it already looks like the film has Jarmusch’s mark on it. Immortality seems to be a platform to explore the melancholy that comes with old age, a subject the director has covered in Broken Flowers (2005). The vampires’ blood-lust looks to have some clear parallels with drug-addiction – most of the vampires looks strung-out and withered, emaciated like junkies; blood type O- is referred to as, “the good stuff.”
