New Live-Action ‘Rurouni Kenshin’ Trailer Has Plenty of Swords and Fire

After the last trailer for the sequel to Rurouni Kenshin, gave us a better look at the lead villain, Shishio (Tatsuya Fujiwara), this new one gives us a better look at the action sequences – they’re fast paced and full of flashing metal, like you would expect from a film based on a popular Japanese comic book about samurai. There’s also a few more shots of Shishio’s team of quirky – though definitely dangerous – villains, the Jupopngatana (Ten Swords).

Kenshin Himura goes up against pure evil Makoto Shishio, who is attempting to overthrow the Meiji government. The fate of the country hangs in the balance as Kenshin Himura takes up the sword that he vowed to never draw again.

Don’t forget, the film is divided into two parts: Kyoto Inferno and The Legend EndsFans of the original comic can probably pick out which scenes in the trailer correspond to scenes in the source material. One thing that separates the Kenshin movie from adaptations of American comics is the way it adapts the comic. American comic adaptations tend to use the source material for inspiration, rather than adapting the story lines panel for panel – one of the few films to subvert this is Sin City. The Kenshin films, on the other hand – and many other Japanese comic-based films like Death Note – are handling the adaptation much filmmakers would handle a novel. Of course some changes have to be made – they adapting a storyline more than a hundred chapters long – but the films are more or less sticking to the story in the comic.
