The literacy-based documentary Sentenced will follow real adults and children who are illiterate and how it affects both their lives and the lives of people around them. According to The Hollywood Reporter, four-time NBA champion Stephen Curry is acting as the film’s producer with his wife, Ayesha Curry.
Other producers include Tony Kriz and Jeff Martin, who founded the Children’s Literacy Project, which tries to use films to bring resources to at-risk schools. Sentenced currently has an official website up for those who want to learn more about the film’s story and personnel on the project.
The official website describes the film as “an immersive and vulnerable exploration of the epidemic of childhood illiteracy through a series of braided character-driven stories.”
There are also profiles on the current six stories that will be told during the film and photos that look at the lives of those who have trouble reading.
Child literacy is a project that holds a special place in the hearts of the Currys. Through their foundation, Eat. Learn. Play., the Currys provide support to Oakland elementary school students. One of their goals is to help these students to become proficient readers by third grade.
