The second trailer for the highly anticipated sequel Avengers: Age of Ultron dropped during last night’s college football championship, giving fans an idea of the grittier content to come. We see again the whole cast of the Avengers joining forces against the chaos that Ultron creates after Tony Stark created him, and a bit of backstory to his creation as well.
The trailer starts with Tony Stark stating that the world needs something to protect it that is more powerful than any of the Avengers, showing that Ultron truly was meant to be the world’s protector; we also see that Bruce Banner did help to create him because he knew Ultron’s name when he staggered out of the workshop. We also get a hint that, possibly, Stark may have been using technology that wasn’t entirely earth-bound when Thor states that he has “meddled in something that you don’t understand”; is it possible that Ultron has some facet of Asgardian technology in him?
Beyond Ultron’s creation, we do see a bit more of the other Avengers. Something is definitely wrong with Banner/Hulk, as seen in his eyes and his uncontrollable rage against his ally and friend Tony Stark/Iron Man. We also get a peek at Natasha Romanoff’s past – for just a few brief seconds – that involved medical tools and some forcible procedure that helped to turn her into the assassin she is today. Hawkeye is also shown to be more of an active player in the action, and Nick Fury does return again, this time for a chilling monologue. Captain America doesn’t have much of a role in this trailer, other than to be nearly choked out by Ultron himself, and Thor doesn’t have as much of a role, though we do see a new lightning trick that seems to involve channeling rather than summoning it down. All of the Avengers will be fighting against Ultron, but that doesn’t mean they won’t be fighting each other again.
Avengers: Age of Ultron stars returning cast Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlet Johanson, Jeremy Renner, and Samuel L. Jackson among others, as well as new cast members Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch and Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Quicksilver. Andy Serkis will also appear, in an as-of-now unnamed role. Joss Whedon and Kevin Feige are returning as director and producer, respectively.
