Chloé Zhao’s Nomadland has been the talk of this awards season, and it’s only been further echoed by the National Society of Film Critics, which named the drama the best picture of 2020. In total, the film was awarded the top honor in four categories. In addition to the award for best picture, Nomadland also won for best cinematography. Zhao was awarded best director, and Frances McDormand was named best actress.
The 55th annual voting meeting’s results were shared to twitter as each category was voted on. Critics were required to select their first, second and third choices for each category, and the films that received the most cumulative points in each category were given the award.
The National Society of Film Critics awarded Delroy Lindo with the award for best actor for his performance in Spike Lee’s Netflix war drama, Da 5 Bloods. Borat Subsequent Moviefilm star Maria Bakalova won the best supporting actress award for her breakout role as Borat’s daughter, Tutar Sagdiyev, and Paul Raci was given the best supporting actor award for his role in Sound of Metal.
The acclaimed Netflix film Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom failed to win any awards from the National Society of Film Critics, but both Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman were named runners up for their respective categories. Boseman also came in third in the best supporting actor category for his performance in Da 5 Bloods.
