Based solely on the title of the picture in question, Holland, Michigan, this new project would seem in keeping with Errol Morris’s history. Morris is best known as a premier documentary filmmaker, the director of projects like The Thin Blue Line, Tabloid, and The Unknown Known, which just premiered at the Telluride Film Festival and is showing at Toronto. But Holland, Michigan is no recording of a lakefront town in the lower peninsula, but rather a narrative drama/thriller about a woman who suspects her husband of infidelity.
Just announced at TIFF, Naomi Watts will be playing that woman, who goes on to start an affair of her own before discovering that her husband is not a cheater but rather a murderer. The project was written by newcomer Andrew Sodroski and is being produced by Cross Creek Pictures (Rush, Black Swan) and Le Grisbi Productions (Blood Ties, End of Watch). No word yet on who will play any of the other roles.
Watts’s newest film, Adore, premiered this weekend, but the more anticipated picture is certainly Diana, which recently got U.S. release date of November 1st, beginning with a limited release and subsequently expanding to more theaters. We’re of the opinion that it would benefit the film to hit as wide a release as it can manage as close to that date as it can to avoid getting drowned out by some stiff competition. Watts also just finished production on St. Vincent de Van Nuys, the indie dramedy starring Bill Murray (among others). Expect to see plenty of Watts in theaters in the next couple years, as in addition to the above she’s also set to appear in Alejandro Gonzalez Innaritu’s (Babel) next picture, Birdman, which Fox Searchlight is distributing in 2014, and is attached to Noah Baumbach’s (The Squid and the Whale) While We’re Young and the starring role in Werner Herzog’s biopic of Gertrude Bell, Queen of the Desert.
