The iconic Japanese manga with the greatest quotes ever is getting a live-action adaptation, and it was just announced that there is a director now attached to direct. Legendary’s live-action adaptation of My Hero Academia has the director behind the Japanese hit film Kingdom and its upcoming sequel Shinsuke Sato is on board to direct, making this adaptation his first English-language feature.
The franchise was created by Kohei Horikoshi in 2014 and became the world’s most famous manga with over 50 million copies. It was first revealed back in 2018 that Legendary wanted to make a My Hero Academia live-action film.
Alex Garcia and Jay Ashenfelter are overseeing for Legendary, and on behalf of the manga publisher, Shueisha will be overseen by Ryosuke Yoritomi. In Japan, the film will be distributed by Toho.
My Hero Academia focuses on superhero fanatic Izuku Midoriya, who fantasizes about being a hero in a world where 80% of the Earth’s population possesses a superpower (or quirk). Izuku, however, is born without, but after a fortuitous meeting with All Might, the greatest hero the world has ever known. To overcome the odds thrown at him, he enrolls in the UA superhero academy, where he will face trials that will force him to sacrifice everything in order to show himself to be truly exceptional.
The Bones Inc. & Toho Animation anime series adaptation is insanely popular in Japan (no surprise) and is on its fifth season. Along with the animated series, three animated films have been released: 2018’s My Hero Academia: Two Heroes, 2019’s My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising, and My Hero Academia: World Heroes’ Mission that was just released last week in Japan.
Sato’s most recent project was the Netflix live-action series Alice in Borderland that premiered in December 2020, which is getting a second season.
