Mortal Kombat was a success last April, so there’s no wonder that the franchise is already in the works to produce a sequel, and writer Jeremy Slater is coming along for the action.
Slater is best known for his work on Disney Marvel’s Moon Knight over on Disney Plus. Mortal Kombat was first an arcade game back in 1992, and its popularity later became a version on The Super NES and Sega Genesis in 1993. Later on, it came to Nintendos famous handled device the Game Boy. Warner Bros and New Line Cinema are recreating this martial arts-inspired video game as a movie adaptation. Last year’s Mortal Kombat earned over 42 million at the box offices and 83 million worldwide.
Mortal Kombat’s director Simon McQuoid hinted to Variety of his interests in expanding the movie franchise. McQuoid discussed future plans for Mortal Kombat and if he will be returning to direct the next upcoming sequel: “None of us used the ‘s-word.’ We’d never talk about it in any depth whatsoever because we feel like we have to put all our energy into this film. That being said, if the fans want another one, that’s not for us to decide; that’s for the fans to decide. Then, we need a couple of joiner pieces that we know can lead us somewhere because there’s a treasure trove of stuff that’s just sitting there.”
Plot details have yet to be finalized. The first Mortal Kombat set up what is to happen in the next sequel. The company hasn’t announced when the sequel is to be released.
