Earlier this week, producer Todd Garner confirmed on his social media that his upcoming film Mortal Kombat will be released theatrically and on HBO Max on April 16, 2021. The film is based off of the popular video game series of the same name, as well as serving as a reboot to the 1995 and 1997 Mortal Kombat films and will be the third installment overall. The first installment in the video game series came out in 1992, so a film adaptation of the game seemed to be the right choice in the 90s. The first Mortal Kombat film is often considered one of the best video game movies of all time, although the sequel didn’t receive the same positive reviews. Because of this, a third installment in the film series was scrapped, until now.
According to Screen Rant, the film was originally going to be released in January 2021. Like most other Warner Bros. films, because of Covid-19, Mortal Kombat kept being postponed. Fans were upset when Todd Garner stated that he wouldn’t post a trailer until theaters reopen, but due to the current world climate, he has now promised a trailer to the film in the next month, with the caption: “Sorry it took so long to get this out”.
Alongside the caption is a first look at the official poster. The film is set to star Ludi Lin, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Joe Taslim, Mehcad Brooks and Lewis Tan, and is directed by Simon McQuoid in his feature directorial debut. Fans have high hopes, and one thing is for sure, it can’t possibly get worse reviews than the second installment in the 90’s film series, which got a disheartening 2% on Rotten Tomatoes.
