Universal has acquired the rights to Nita Pronovost’s debut novel ‘The Maid’. Florence Pugh, who was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in Little Women, is set to star and produce the adaption. Josh McLaughlin and Chris Goldberg will be producing the adaption through their companies Wink Pictures and Winterlight Pictures as well. Prose will serve as an executive producer.
‘The Maid’ is set to be published in 2022 via Penguin Random House in the U.S. and Canada. The story is set at the Regency Grand Hotel “where you will find Molly” the maid who cleans the guests’ messes and keeps their secrets with her until she finds the infamous wealthy guest Mr. Black dead in his bed. The book has been reviewed as “a quirky cozy, murder-mystery with a lovable protagonist at its heart” has sold in 20 territories. Its rights were sold to Hilary Teeman at Penguin RandomHouse / Ballantine in a record-breaking major deal for the agency.
Pugh is a rising star following her success in 2019 with Midsommar and her Oscar-nominated role in Little Women. She will also be starring in Marvel’s Black Widow as Yelena Belova, which is set to hit the theaters in May 2021. Pugh will also be starring as the female lead in Don’t Worry Darling, being directed by Olivia Wilde.
