‘Moonlight’ Wins Best Feature at 2016 Gotham Awards

And we’re off to the races. The 25th Gotham Awards took place Monday night in New York City, honoring the best and brightest of independent cinema as well as officially ushering in the 2016 awards season. In the end, while the Gothams tend to have share the love type of vibe, it was Barry Jenkins’ critical darling Moonlight that prevailed, taking home the Best Feature prize as well as the Best Screenplay prize and a Special Gotham Prize awarded to its ensemble cast. While the Gothams historically don’t mean too much when it comes to Oscars, any lift to a smaller sized feature adds extra weight to a looming campaign. While Academy accessibility may not be guaranteed, given Moonlight‘s critical acclaim, it likely won’t be last time the film nabs a headline.

Oscar hopefuls Casey Affleck and Isabelle Huppert were both awarded the acting prizes for the films Manchester by the Sea and Elle, respectively. Check out the full list of winners below:
