‘Moonlight’ Star Ashton Sanders Next Project to be ‘Captive State’

It was reported on Friday that 20 year-old Ashton Sanders has signed on opposite John Goodman to star in Rupert Wyatt’s next film Captive State. The sci-fi film has not yet disclosed plot details or characters, but has announced that it will begin shooting early 2017.

Sanders, who had been studying theatre at DePaul University until the success of Moonlight, also had small role in last year’s Straight Out of Compton. He got his start in the 2014 film The Retrieval, in which he portrayed civil war-era teenager who travels north with his uncle (check out an exclusive interview from that film here).

In Moonlight, Sanders portrayed the teenage Chiron, a black boy in Miami struggling with homosexual identity as well as his mother’s drug addiction. Along with his entire Moonlight cast, Sanders has been receiving much praise for his performance, receiving ensemble awards at the Gotham Awards, the Independent Spirit Awards, and the Critics Choice Awards already.

Director Rupert Wyatt is most well-known for bringing us films Rise of the Planet of the Apes and The Gambler, and most recently for showrunning the television series The Exorcist. This film will reunite Goodman and Wyatt who previously worked on The Gambler together.

Wyatt co-wrote the script for Captive State with his wife, Erica Beeney. The project is being produced by Participant Media and Amblin Partners. David Crockett along with Wyatt will produce. Executive producers include Jonathan King and Participant Media CEO Jeff Skoll (both this year alone has been credited as executive producer for Deepwater Horizon, Denial, Neruda, and A Monster Calls) as well as Ron Schmidt.

The film will hit theaters in 2018.
