Michael Bay Confirmed to Direct ‘Transformers 5’

Despite some speculation, Michael Bay will return to direct the 5th installment in the Transformers series.

The first three Transformers films saw Shia Labeouf in the lead role, but the fourth film, Transformers: Age of Extinction, starred Mark Wahlberg instead. Wahlberg is expected to return for the fifth installment, being the only previous cast member to reprise his role. Bay, who is in the middle of promoting his upcoming war film 13 Hours, has directed all four Transformers films so far, but states that this new installment will most likely be his last.

Paramount is planning on creating a Transformers universe akin to the Marvel Cinematic Universe we have all grown accustomed to, equipped with spin-off films and the like. The studio has kept the story of Transformers 5 a secret, but has hired Art Marcum and Matt Holloway (Iron Man) to write the script along with Ken Nolan (Black Hawk Down).

Transformers 5 is set to hit theaters sometime in 2017.
