MGM Acquires Rights to Book Proposal About Ongoing Gamestop Situation, ‘The Antisocial Network’

Even though the GameStop Stock situation is ongoing and some are still getting up to speed, MGM is already in the early stages of making film based on it. Following a bidding war, the studio has acquired the rights to a book proposal from bestselling author Ben Mezrich titled, The Antisocial Network, which follows the unraveling situation taking place on the stock market.

Mezrich has already had a few nonfiction books that have been adapted into films, including 21 and The Social Network. The book proposal will follow a group of ragtag “amateur investors, gamers, and internet trolls who brought Wall Street to its knees.” The David vs. Goliath story of amateur investors from the Reddit Page r/WallStreetBets who joined together to squeeze at least two hedge funds that bet the GameStop stocks would fall is the sort of thing that Hollywood loves, but without knowing the ins and outs of Wall Street, it may prove difficult for the average U.S. citizen to get a good understanding of things.

Some are already inquiring that the upcoming film will follow in the footsteps of Adam McKay‘s 2015 biographical dramedy The Big Short, which dissected the stock market crash of 2008 and made it palatable to general audiences. It’s unclear exactly how and when the GameStop story ends since it’s still happening, but with so much public attention, it makes sense that major studios are jumping on a chance to make a film about the situation as soon as possible.
