‘Mary Magdalene’ Starring Rooney Mara and Joaquin Phoenix To Be Released in April

A film that has gone through struggle to be acquired and released, Mary Magdalene, has finally found its window of release. Originally property of the Weinstein Company, which collapsed following the allegations against founder Harvey Weinstein, the film was acquired by IFC films for distribution.

Directed by Garth Davis, who is known for his directing of the 2016 film Lion, Mary Magdalene tells the story from the bible of woman who leaves her village to follow and be a disciple of Jesus Christ. It is a story that has been retold thousands of times over, but follows the events from the perspective of the woman, Mary, rather than from Jesus and his previous disciples. Starring as Mary Magdalene is Rooney Mara with Joaquin Phoenix as Jesus.

Alongside news of the new release date came a new trailer for the film. Mary Magdalene is set to open in US theaters on April 12th of this year. The newest trailer for the film can be checked out below.

Robert Thornson Jr.: My name is Robert and I am currently an undergraduate student at the University of California Irvine. I am pursuing a B.A. in Film and Media studies with hopes to work in the creative industry. I have always had a passion for storytelling and since youth I've loved film. I grew up loving the movies of directors like Wes Anderson, Stanley Kubrick, Alfred Hitchcock, Martin Scorsese, David Fincher, and many more along with writers such as Aaron Sorkin and Quentin Tarantino. One thing I have always done is write about movies and communicate to others information about the "film community" and the industry as well as about the films themselves. I write creatively on a daily basis.
