A reboot of Blade with Mahershala Ali set to star is currently in development at Marvel Studios. However, the reboot of the beloved superhero/horror film has been in disarray with, according to an article by Variety, “at least five writers, two directors and one shutdown six weeks before production.” As well as “reports that Ali was ready to exit over script issues.” These setbacks have caused delays and chaos within the Marvel Cinematic Universe Studios.
The Blade reboot was set to be a narrative led by women writers and directors with a focus on Bloodline: Daughter of Blade, a comic that was released earlier this year. However, the film is now said to have a budget of less than $100 million and has been pushed back to 2025. This new budget is a stark contrast to the big-budget movies Marvel is familiar with making. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, released earlier this year, had a budget of 250 million USD, and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania had a budget of 200 million USD.
The lower budget for the Blade reboot is not an indicator that all hope for a successful film is lost, as the original Blade movie (1998) had a budget of 45 million USD and grossed 131.2 million USD at the box office. Blade’s horror and superhero genre mix gives the movie a better chance to do well upon its release, as horror and superhero movies are some of the few genres guaranteed to receive high box-office ratings.
Michael Green, known for Logan (2017), Blade Runner (2017), and Green Lantern (2011), has been brought on to rewrite the movie and reportedly will be taking a new approach to the story.
