Martin Scorsese Explains Cinema Is ‘Transforming’

While receiving an Honorary Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival, filmmaker Martin Scorsese expanded on his prior comments regarding the state of cinema. During a press conference, Scorsese clarified that he believes that cinema is transforming, not dying.

According to the director, film was never meant to be one thing for people to enjoy. While he experienced movies as a “communal experience,” Scorsese recognized that “the technology’s changed so rapidly and exhaustedly, that in a sense the only thing you can really hold on to is the individual voice.” He somewhat jokingly remarked that this individual voice could pierce through TikTok as much as “a four-hour film or a two-hour miniseries.”

Regarding technology like AI, Scorsese isn’t afraid of what it could mean for the future. He explained that people shouldn’t fear technology and instead guide it towards a better direction. “The right direction being from the individual voice, rather than something that is just consumed and tossed away,” he explained.

In addition, Scorsese also elaborated on the current state of his upcoming Jesus project. While he doesn’t have a solid plan for the overall structure, he is still working on the final product. “I want to make something unique and different that could be thought-provoking, and I hope also entertaining,” he expounded. “Maybe I’ll get some sleep and then wake up, and I’ll have this fresh idea on how to do it.”
