Lucasfilm President Dave Filoni Talks Future Of ‘Star Wars’ Features

Lucasfilm's 'The Mandalorian and Grogu' (2026)

While Star Wars’ first theatrical release in seven years is coming at the end of this month with The Mandalorian and Grogu, fans are eagerly wondering whether or not new Lucasfilm President Dave Filoni will keep pace with the one Kathleen Kennedy set, or will he break new ground. Steve Weintraub of Collider interviewed both Filoni and director/writer Jon Favreau to talk about the upcoming film as well as the future of Star Wars as a whole. Filoni details how he strategizes and prioritizes his projects, saying,

For me right now, rather than dealing with hard numbers like that, I’m just looking at the stories and the potential and planning what I’d like to do. I believe in having an overarching idea and then saying, ‘Okay, it’s this many of that, and then we can have that.’ There are certain things that have been in motion already that, obviously, I want to continue. Jon and I have had a great partnership for many years now, telling stories. So, I look at the stories that I’m kind of planning and architecting, and I look at other creative talents that bring us, also, great stories, and I just try to find a way to make them all work.

Filoni also states that he plans to continue as the creator/developer for shows such as Ahsoka (2023-) and Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord (2026-), both of which have a second season currently in development. Ahsoka is planning an early 2027 release, with voice actor Sam Witmer confirming it to already be in production, promising, “We’ve been working on it for a while, and it’s interesting.” Filonio also brought up Shawn Levy’s Starfighter, which he believes the filmmaker “did a great job with.”

Not much is known about Starfighter plot-wise, just that it will canonically take place five years after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Cast-wise, the film is stacked with Ryan Gosling at the helm; he will be joined by Flynn Gray, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, and Amy Adams. Filoni went on to describe what else is in store for this upcoming year in the galaxy far, far away.

And the re-release of Episode IV. There’s so much exciting stuff coming for Star Wars fans. But I have to say, I said this earlier, fans have known me now for 20 years and that I’ve worked with and told Star Wars stories, so I think they have a good idea of what to expect. I’ve so far really enjoyed collaborating with everybody, and we are well on our way. The future’s in motion now, so it’s exciting.

The Mandalorian and Grogu will be released in theaters on May 22nd.
