Big plans are already brewing for Luca Guadagnino‘s potential Oscar contender Call Me By Your Name. After working with his two co-stars Armie Hammer and Timothée Chalamet, the filmmaker is hankering to get the pair back on screen for planned 2020 sequel, according to Screen Daily.
Much in the way Richard Linklater built upon a years-spanning relationship in his Before trilogy between characters portrayed by Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy, Guadagnino hopes to continue the love affair between his same-sex protagonists.
Call Me By Your Name, which has been capturing hearts across the film festivals this year, follows 17-year-old Italian boy Elio (Chalamet) and 24-year-old American Doctoral student Oliver (Hammer). The two meet during Oliver’s tutelage abroad and begin a passionate affair at Elio’s parents’ villa in the 1980s. The sequel would see the relationship pick up seven years later when Elio is 25 and Oliver is 31. For a 2020 release, this will coincide with Chalamet being 25-years-old himself, while Hammer will be 34.
Guadagnino revealed his idea during the rounds at the BFI London Film Festival: “I want to do a sequel because Timothée Chalamet, Armie Hammer, Michael Stuhlbarg, Amira Casar, Esther Garrel – they are all gems. The texture we built together is very consistent. We created a place in which you believe in the world before them. They are young but they are growing up.”
The new story will surpass the source material that was adapted from André Aciman’s 2007 novel. In Aciman’s story, his character do meet again 15 years in the future and sees Oliver with a wife and children. While Guadagnino did not admit to plans in adapting this aspect of the story, he did hint that Elio may not necessarily be living homosexually when we see him next.
That said, 2020 is three years away now, and we have the first Call Me By Your Name still to look forward to when it is released on Nov. 24.
