Wunmi Mosaku made a name for herself, starring in Lovecraft Country, and is continuing to rise as it was announced on Monday that Mosaku would star in a women’s rights indie drama Call Jane that screenwriter Phyllis Nagy (Carol) will direct. Mosaku is joined by cast members Elizabeth Banks (Charlie’s Angels), Sigourney Weaver (Avatar), Kate Mara (A Teacher), and Rupert Friend (Homeland). Hayley Schore (The Resident) and Roshan Sethi (The Resident) wrote the script based on The Blacklist script.
The film’s plot follows Joy (Banks), a traditional 1960s housewife who accidentally becomes pregnant. She then stumbles across the Janes, an underground abortion movement led by Virginia (Weaver). The organization saves her life and gives her a sense of purpose: to assist other women in taking back control of their lives.
Mosaku also appeared in the Sundance horror-thriller His House, and for her role in that film, she earned herself a BAFTA nomination for Best Actress and won Best Actress at the 2020 British Independent Film Awards. She also appeared in Warner Bros. Harry Potter Spinoff Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Mosaku’s next role will be in Loki, a highly awaited Disney+ series scheduled to debut on June 11, alongside Tom Hiddleston.
