James Mangold, the director of Logan, is currently in talks with 20th Century Fox to adapt The Force, according to Deadline. If the negotiations go well he’ll be directing and developing author Don Winslow’s novel of the same name. Apparently Fox acquired the rights to the novel for seven figures before it even had title, and the book still won’t even be published until June 20th. They have yet to select a screenwriter to work alongside Mangold, but if he accepts Fox’s terms, that will be the next step in the process.
The novel follows Sgt. Denny Malone, a corrupt high-ranking NYPD detective who is forced to decide between the lives of his family, partner, and self. His decision will somehow affect the city’s pervasive racial tension issues from coming to a head. While he deals with these issues, many more pile on top. Trouble with drug gangs, the mob, fellow officers, and the mayor’s office are just a few of the things Malone has to sort out in the story.
Don Winslow’s work has received a lot attention from some of Hollywood’s most elite filmmakers. Ridley Scott, Martin Scorsese, Robert De Niro, Oliver Stone, and Leonardo DiCaprio are among some of those who’ve shown interest in developing his work. Scott is actually slated to direct one of his novels called The Cartel.
Mangold also has a biopic on the horizon titled Seducing Ingrid Bergman about the relationship between actress Ingrid Bergman and war photographer Robert Capa.
