Universal Pictures has quickly jumped at live-action film Strays from Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the tag team behind the recent hit on Netflix, The Mitchells vs. The Machines. The film will be produced with Erik Feig’s Picturestart, and Josh Greenbaum will direct. Greenbaum recently made his directorial debut with comedy starring Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo Barb & Star Go to Vista Del Mar.
Strays is an adult comedy that came from an original pitch by writer Dan Perrault (American Vandal), about an abandoned dog that joins forces with other strays to exact revenge on his previous owner. The film is part of Lord and Miller’s first-look deal with Universal, which is overseen by Donna Langley. It intends to make movies in comedy and drama based on original content, existing IP, and other media forms.
Lord and Miller had a fantastic run on Netflix when their animated comedy The Mitchells vs. The Machines debut on the streaming service in March. The film is currently at no.7 on Netflix’s top 10.
The duo is currently working on the sequel to the Oscar-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. They are also set to direct the adaptation of Michael Lewis’ best-selling novel The Premonition: A Pandemic Story for Universal. The novel was just published a few weeks ago, on May 4, 2021.
