Lily Gladstone’s role in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon as Osage woman and historical figure Mollie Burkhart has landed her historic nomination for Best Actress at the Academy Awards. She is the first Native American woman to be given this nomination. The film also secured many other nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actor for Robert De Niro. The film was also shortlisted for Best Makeup & Hairstyling, Best Sound, and Best Music for its song “Wazhazhe (A Song for My People).”
In addition to her Oscars nomination, Gladstone won at the Golden Globes, nabbing Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama. Killers of the Flower Moon had many nominations at the Golden Globes, but Gladstone is the only one to take home a win for the film. This was a historic win as she became the first Indigenous woman to receive this award. She noted the importance of her win during her speech, stating, “This is a historic win. It doesn’t belong to just me. I’m holding it right now. I’m holding it with all of my beautiful sisters in the film at the table over here, and my mother, standing on all of your shoulders…This is for every little rez kid, every little urban kid, every little Native kid out there who has a dream and is seeing themselves represented in our stories told by ourselves, in our own words, with tremendous allies and tremendous trust from within, from each other.”
Gladstone has had plenty of success this awards season. Although she was snubbed at the BAFTAS, she received a nomination for Best Actress at both the Critics’ Choice Awards and the Screen Actors Guild Awards.
