Liam Neeson’s ‘Honest Thief’ Wins the Weekend Box Office as Theaters Struggle

As theaters struggle to stay afloat due to the lack of big releases, smaller films are getting a bigger share of the spotlight. Liam Neeson’s new action thriller, Honest Thief, took the number one spot at the box office this weekend, earning $3.7 million domestically.

The film stars Neeson as a bank robber who gets double-crossed by FBI agents. Although the critical reception was less than stellar, Honest Thief currently has an 88% audience score with 314 ratings on Rotten Tomatoes.

In second place this weekend was the Robert De Niro-led family comedy, The War with Grandpa. Christopher Nolan’s action thriller Tenet sits at #3.

Overall grosses are slowly increasing. This weekend’s Top Ten total of $11.8 million is the best the U.S. box office has seen since Tenet’s second weekend in early September.

In fourth place was Disney’s The Nightmare Before Christmas, a reissue of the 1993 animated fantasy film. Without an abundance of new films to draw in audiences, theaters have resorted to screening popular classic films, including Disney’s Hocus Pocus, and the 1988 fantasy comedy, Beetlejuice.

Russel Crowe’s Unhinged and the final X-Men film, The New Mutants, still hold spots in the top 10.

In an effort to draw in more audiences, AMC Theaters recently began allowing movie-goers to host their own private screenings starting at $99.
