After receiving backlash for posting a video containing climate change skepticism, accusations that China intentionally spread COVID-19, transphobic comments and anti-vaccination sentiments, Black Panther star Letitia Wright has deleted her Twitter and Instagram accounts.
Wright tweeted a link to the video on Thursday night with the prayer hands emoji, and then deleted it shortly after. The video, which was posted on the YouTube channel “On The Table,” was also removed from YouTube for violating its terms of service.
“My intention was not to hurt anyone,” Wright said on Friday in response to backlash. “My ONLY intention of posting the video was it raised my concerns with what the vaccine contains and what we are putting in our bodies…Nothing else.”
It’s unclear how or if the controversy will affect Wright’s role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After the passing of Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman, many speculated that Wright’s character Shuri would be the next to take on the Black Panther mantle. Fellow MCU star Don Cheadle was one of the stars to chime in on the controversy.
“Jesus… just scrolled through. hot garbage. every time i stopped and listened, he and everything he said sounded crazy and fkkkd up,” Cheadle tweeted. “i would never defend anybody posting this. but i still won’t throw her away over it. the rest i’ll take off twitter. had no idea.”
