According to Deadline, Phil Lord and Chris Miller (22 Jump Street) have signed on with Warner Bros. to script The LEGO Movie 2. Already on board as producers, Lord and Miller now have much more control in shaping the sequel. After writing and directing The LEGO Movie, which hit theaters earlier this year, it has been unknown whether the duo would return beyond producing the sequel. Unfortunately, the question still remains as to whether or not they’ll return to direct the film as well.
Since the sequel is currently without a director, it’s possible Lord & Miller will also end up back at the wheel; it’s also possible they’ll just stick with writing and producing as they did for Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2 after directing the first. After all, their schedule is pretty full at the moment. In addition to The LEGO Movie 2, the pair are executive producing Will Forte’s (MacGruber) comedy series Last Man on Earth and developing two pilots: an untitled comedy at CBS with The Interview scribe Dan Sterling and a remake of 1981’s Greatest American Hero for 20th Century Fox Television.
Before The LEGO Movie even hit theaters, Warner Bros. began planning a sequel with writers Jared Stern and Michelle Morgan, and animation supervisor-turned-director Chris McKay (Robot Chicken) for May 2017. However, McKay left the project for The LEGO Batman Movie spinoff that has been fast-tracked for February 2017 release, pushing The LEGO Movie 2 back to May 2018. Fortunately for the franchise, and Warner Bros., that delay has allowed Lord and Miller to return as writers. So far, The LEGO Movie has grossed $468 million worldwide, and is third highest grossing film of the year.
Dan Lin (Gangster Squad) and Roy Lee (How to Train Your Dragon) will be producing with Lord and Miller, with Michelle Morgan (Girl Most Likely) and Jared Stern (Wreck-It Ralph) helping with the script.
