Lady Bird has easily become one of the most highly touted films of 2017, and film critics definitely agree. The National Society of Film Critics recently held their award ceremony in New York, and Lady Bird stole the show with four different awards, including Best Picture. It was also awarded Best Director (Greta Gerwig), Best Screenplay (also Gerwig), and Best Supporting Actress (for Laurie Metcalf).
Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay all had the same runner-ups, with Get Out and Phantom Thread just missing top honors. Four other awards were given out during the ceremony, including Best Cinematography for Roger Deakin’s work on Blade Runner 2049, Best Actor for Daniel Kaluuya’s performance in Get Out, Best Actress for Sally Hawkins in Shape of Water and Maudie, and Best Supporting Actor for Willem Dafoe in The Florida Project.
Many of the films that won awards from the National Society of Film Critics are all definite award nominees for a variety of different categories. It will be very interesting to see what other awards ceremonies give the Best Picture to, although many have speculated that Lady Bird will be taking the award almost every time. Will another film be able to knock off the coming-of-age film from its pedestal?
