This past weekend saw the newest film in the Jurassic Park franchise overtake Top Gun: Maverick at the box office with a stomping $143M opening weekend. Maverick is still doing phenomenally well by hitting the $400M benchmark after three weekends in movie theaters.
The first weekend out for Jurassic World: Dominion came in at an estimated $143M. Falling right behind Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018) with $148M yet miles away from Jurassic World (2015) with $208.8M. Nonetheless, this is one of the largest pandemic-era openings that does not include a caped or web-slinging superhero. Its global tally sees the dinosaur monstrosity rise up to $389M.
The film’s premise sees dinosaurs all over the globe working alongside humans, as well as new visual effects and never before seen dinosaurs. As for the perception of the film so far, critics have torn the film apart for banking too hard on nostalgia as well as for its poor writing which has given the film the lowest score on Rotten Tomatoes for the franchise. Audiences however have taken a more positive take on the film, giving it an A- on CinemaScore. The film is a draw for the under 18 demographics and for the men 18-34 demos as well.
