Julianne Moore Cast as Alma Coin For ‘Mockingjay’

Julianne Moore has been active in the indie scene lately, but she’s apparently decided it’s time to return to some studio pics. She’s already set to appear as the evil witch Mother Malkin in Seventh Son, which releases in January, an per earlier rumors, news has come down that she is indeed to play the leader of the rebellious District 13 in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 & 2.

Moore and fellow series newcomers Natalie Dormer (Game of Thrones), Stef Dawson (Wrath), and Evan Ross (Jeff, Who Lives at Home) will join returning stars Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson, and more for the two-part adaptation of the final Hunger Games book. The films will be directed by Francis Lawrence, who also directed Catching Fire, taking over for Gary Ross, who was in charge of the immensely popular but only moderately reviewed first movie.

As mentioned, Moore has been on a bit of an indie tear of late. Following her role in the Academy Award nominated The Kids Are All Right in 2010, the only major film she’s been in was the independently produced Crazy, Stupid, Love. She played a leading role in What Maisie Knew, released earlier this year. Mostly, though, she’s just about to show up more than any actor not named Benedict Cumberbatch or Michael Fassbender. She’ll be back in theaters in two weeks for Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Don Jon, and again in mid-October for Carrie before turning the calendar to Seventh Son January 17th and airborne action/thriller Non-Stop on the last day of February.
