Fox has found a new director for their next team of mutants. The studio announced that Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars) will direct the next story surrounding a brand-new team of mutants born with special powers, titled X-Men: The New Mutants.
Boone will write the script with Knate Gwaltney (Cardboard Boxer). No plot details have been announced, but the New Mutants characters (Cannonball, Karma, Mirage, Sunspot, and Wolfsbane) have never been brought to the big screen. Boone made Fox a lot of money with the coming-of-age drama The Fault in Our Stars, and given that this new team includes teenaged mutants, it makes sense that they would bring him on to lead the project. He is also reportedly working on adaptations of Stephen King’s The Stand and Lisey’s Story.
The project will be the latest addition to the X-Men franchise, which continues with X-Men: Apocalypse next summer. The movie will mark the final X-Men film for Nicholas Hoult (Mad Max: Fury Road) and Jennifer Lawrence (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1), who signed three-film contracts that started with X-Men: First Class. Hugh Jackman also announced that the upcoming untitled Wolverine sequel would be his last time donning the iconic Adamantium claws.
Fox is also coping with the loss of their iconic actors by expanding the X-Men universe with other characters, with Channing Tatum (Magic Mike XXL) playing Gambit and Ryan Reynolds (Woman in Gold) playing Deadpool. Both will be getting their own movies.
X-Men: The New Mutants is still in early pre-production with no specific release plans at this time. X-Men: Apocalypse will be released on May 27, 2016.
