‘Joker’ Box Office Success Increases Chances of ‘Spawn’ Reboot

For the past few years, comic book creator Todd McFarlane has been pushing to get another movie based on his comic book series Spawn off the ground. And while there have been many rumors floating around on how a possible Spawn movie would be entering production soon, sadly nothing official ever really came from these rumors.

You see, back in the 90’s the Spawn comic series was adapted in a movie starring Michael Jai White as the titular character Spawn. However this movie was not well received by film critics and fans of the comics. Many fans were upset because Spawn was rated PG-13 but the comic book source material it was based on is very dark. Fans felt that, in order to adapt the comic book properly, the movie would need a R rating, and unfortunately a lot of major movie studios were hesitant about making a R-rated superhero movie. Instead Spawn saw better success with the HBO animated series starring Keith David as Spawn.

But, according to Comic Book Resources, the recent success of Joker has led to some studios beginning to take an interest in the Spawn franchise.  Joker, starring Joaquin Phoenix, recently surpassed Deadpool 2 as the highest grossing R-rated movie worldwide. It appears that the successes of Joker and the Deadpool movies combined might encourage studios to make more mainstream R-rated superhero films. Who knows, maybe this time a studio will be confident enough to give Spawn another chance.
