Jason Momoa has a lot to be proud of, Conan the Barbarian was not one of them. The Aquaman actor played the warlord in the 2011 remake of the 1982 film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.
In an interview with British GQ, Momoa slammed the film. “I’ve been a part of a lot of things that really sucked, and movies where it’s out of your hands,” Momoa told the magazine. “Conan was one of them. It’s one of the best experiences I had, and it [was] taken over and turned into a big pile of s***.”
The action-fantasy film cost $90 million to make and was released in 3D. It was destroyed by critics, earning a 25% score on Rotten Tomatoes and sunk it to a mere gross of $48 million at the box office.
It did have a tumultuous history, the film was originally stalled at Warner Bros. before Lionsgate bought the rights. Brett Ratner was prematurely announced as the director before German filmmaker Marcus Nispel joined the production in June 2009. Momoa was cast in January 2010.
Of course, Conan did not tank Momoa’s career and he recovered nicely, debuting as Dothraki warlord Khal Drogo in HBO’s Game of Thrones before Conan‘s release. Since then he has been cast as the seafaring superhero Aquaman for DC’s film universe. He first appeared in 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and then 2017’s Justice League and 2018’s Aquaman.
He also had a supporting role in 2021’s Dune and his second Aquaman film, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will arrive later this year.
