Jason Clarke (Zero Dark Thirty, White House Down) is getting set to join the cast of Child 44, a 1950’s Soviet detective thriller. Clarke’s character Brodsky is the prime suspect in a series of brutal child murders and is pursued by state security agent Leo Demidov (played by Tom Hardy). The film was originally set to be directed by Ridley Scott, but after a change of plans, Scott will be producing the film and Safe House director Daniel Espinosa will be at the helm.
The film is based on the novel Child 44 by Tom Rob Smith. The story is partially based on the crimes of Andrei Chikatilo, the Ukranian serial killer who was executed for 52 murders in the Soviet Union. Child 44 is the first book in a trilogy so the film has potential for sequels. Both sequels, The Secret Speech, and Agent 6, are set in Soviet Russia and feature the investigator Leo Demidov.
Child 44 boasts a supporting cast of Noomi Rapace, Gary Oldman, and Philip Seymour Hoffman. While Rapace appears as Demidov’s wife and Oldman is cast as the general Timur Nestorov, Hoffman’s role in the film is currently a mystery.
