As filming for the new Superman film has just begun, a change in the title has been officially revealed.
In an Instagram post on his official account, director and writer James Gunn said that he came to the realization to change the name when he finished the final draft of the film. Not only that, but Gunn says coincidentally these announcements came out on Feb. 29, which happens to be Superman’s birthday.
The Hollywood Reporter has made note that the film’s new name is now the same as the original 1978 film starring Christopher Reeves. Gunn has decided to drop the “Legacy’ part of of the title, and make the new title Superman.
The official plot, according to IMDb, will follow Superman trying to reconcile his heritage with his human upbringing. THR also suggests based on the photo that Gunn posted on his Instagram, which shows snow on Superman’s suit, that one of the locations in the film will be The Fortress of Solitude, which is the superheroes base in the arctic.
The film will star David Corenswet (Pearl) as Clark Kent/Superman and Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) playing Lois Lane. Lex Luthor, staple villain in the Superman universe, will be played by Nicholas Hoult (Reinfield).
Other actors in this film will include Skyler Gisondo (The Righteous Gemstones), Sara Sampaio (At Midnight), Edi Gathegi (For All Mankind), Terence Rosemore (Haunted Mansion (2023)), Anthony Carrigan (Barry), Isabela Merced (Madame Web and Migration), Nathan Fillion (The Rookie) and María Gabriela de Faría (The Duel).
Superman is set to hit theaters July 2025.
