Jack Reynor (Glassland), James Franco (127 Hours), Dennis Quaid (Flight of the Phoenix), and Zoe Kravitz (Dope) have all been chosen to topline the sci-fi action thriller Kin, according to Deadline
Jonathan and Josh Baker are directing the new film based on their short Bag Man. The story will just be an extension of that project, following a recently released ex-con (Reynor) and his younger brother as they go on the run from a revenge-seeking criminal (Franco), the FBI, and a team of otherworldly soldiers with their only defense being a mysterious ancestral weapon. Quaid will play the brothers’ father and Kravitz will play a woman they pick up on their journey. Daniel Casey, who did an uncredited re-write on 10 Cloverfield Lane, wrote the script.
Producers at 21 Laps – they’re behind the runaway Netflix series Stranger Things – and No Trace Camping – the production company behind the Oscar-winning Room – are backing the film. They will be taking the unfinished project to the Toronto Film Festival to shop it for distributors.
Reynor, who won the Sundance Special Jury Acting Prize last year for his performance in Glassland, was most recently seen in John Carney’s Sing Street. He has full slate of films up ahead, including a role in Free Fire opposite Brie Larson, as well as the WWII ensemble HHhH, and Andy Serkis’ Jungle Book as Brother Wolf. Franco will soon see the release of his films Goat, In Dubious Battle, Zeroville, and Why Him?. He recently directed The Institute and Long Home, which will both bow in 2017, and will soon be starring in a new HBO series titled The Deuce about porn and prostitution in Manhattan during the ’70s and ’80s.
Kin is set to start production on October 24.
