The cast is starting to round up for Jack Reacher 2, the Tom Cruise-headlined franchise based on the best-selling series by novelist Lee Child. Cruise, fresh from the enormous summertime success of Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation will return but the sequel seems to promise new faces both behind and in front of the camera. Variety reports that rising actor Patrick Heusinger is currently in talks to join the cast, taking on the role of the villain.
While the 2011 release of Jack Reacher brought a moderate level of success domestically (bringing in $80 million in ticket sales), the film did better abroad and enough for Paramount to have a go for a second round. Rogue Nation writer/director Christopher McQuarrie was the originals’ director and Cruise was joined by cast that included Oscar nominee Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl), David Oyelowo (Selma), Jai Courtney (Unbroken), Oscar winner Robert Duvall (The Judge) and filmmaker Werner Herzog.
Jack Reacher 2 changes that up with Edward Zwick (who directed Cruise in the 2003 film The Last Samurai and recently released the Bobby Fischer film Pawn Sacrifice) in the director’s chair and co-writing the sequel with Marshall Herskowitz- Richard Wenk (The Equalizer) wrote an early draft of the film. The film will be based on Child’s novel Never Let Go, where homicide investigator Reacher journeys to U.S. Army Military Police Corps headquarters upon discovering that his new commanding officer has been arrested. Cobie Smulders (Results), Aldis Hodge (Straight Outta Compton) and Danika Yarosh (Heroes Reborn) round out the cast.
Heusinger, who recently appeared in the well received Bravo series Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce, has been building a steady stream of film, television and theater credits in recent years. He has appeared in films including Sweet Land (2005), The Nanny Diaries (2007), the Oscar-winning Black Swan (2010) and Frances Ha (2013). On the Los Angeles stage, the actor recently concluded an run as the lead in a critically acclaimed re-staging of Bent at the Mark Taper Forum. Heusinger is slated to next appear in the television/gaming hybrid Quantum Break, currently in post-production
Jack Reacher 2 is currently scheduled for a theatrical release on October 21, 2016.
