Director Harald Zwart (The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones) has been tapped by Blumhouse Productions to direct a new horror movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Zwart’s lack of horror experience might be just what the project needs because Blumhouse the film is being described as a horror movie aimed at families.
Zwart’s experience with family movies goes all the way back to 2003’s Agent Cody Banks. He also directed family hits The Pink Panther 2 (2009) and the 2010 remake of The Karate Kid. Writing the movie is veteran scribe Robert Ben Garant, whose credits include Taxi (2004), Night at the Museum (2006), and Jessabelle (2014).
It will be interesting to see how the experiment of a family horror movie pays off. The film, which currently doesn’t have a title or known premise, will undoubtedly be a low-budget, low-risk affair for Blumhouse, the production house that specializes in low-cost, high-profit films. Only time will tell whether the finished product hues closer to the animated The Nightmare Before Christmas or the live-action Gremlins.
