Set in the 1970s, Safelight centers on Charles (Evan Peters, TV’s American Horror Story), a teenage photographer with cerebral palsy, and Vicki (Juno Temple, Atonement), a troubled runaway. Together they embark on a road trip along the California coast so that Charles can photograph lighthouses for a school contest, and along the way the two strike up an unlikely connection.
Helmed by Tony Aloupis in his feature writing/directorial debut for – he is previously known for his short film Sugar – the trailer treats viewers to distinctive 70s apparel, a quintessential road trip vehicle (ruby red convertible), a nostalgic look at the California coast, and a sweetly budding romance.
The two stars of the film are both actors on the rise in their own right. Peters, best known for FX’s American Horror Story anthology series, has garnered a large following – one that banked him a brief-but-memorable role as Quicksilver in X-Men: Days of Future Past. He will be reprising his role (hopefully in a larger stint) for next year’s X-Men: Apocalypse. Up Ahead, he will also be appearing in the sci-fi horror film The Lazarus Effect and in the biopic Elvis & Nixon.
Temple, while still mostly being billed as an up-and-coming actress, is already quite a mainstay in the indie genre. More likely than not, she is somewhere to be found on your Netflix queue. She will next be appearing in the Thomas Hardy-adaptation Far From the Madding Crowd and alongside Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game) in the crime drama Black Mass.
